Summer Crafts Project

Summer is full swing! While most of us are busy everyday with events, some days-like the rainy and stormy ones recently- are perfect for some fun summer crafts.

clip_image002These simple pinwheels can be made for decorations, party favors, or just for fun. We made ours with colored card stock, but you might try cereal boxes, or you could use plain paper and let the kids draw or paint a design. You could put them on skewers and decorate a cake with them, plant them in your garden, or make a garland of pinwheels. You could use sticks from your yard instead of the dowel rods for a natural look. And you could draw faces on the circle to make flower people.

clip_image002Supplies:
-Card stock
-Jumbo paper clips
-Scissors
-Pliers (helpful, but not necessary)
-Dowel rods, approximately 12″ long
-Beads

1. Gather your supplies.
2. Cut card stock according to template: Download file
3. Fold down corners along one side of each flower petal.
4. Unbend a paper clip and slip a bead on it. Bend at the end to secure the bead.
5. Assemble the pinwheel with the circle next, then the pinwheel flower, and finally another bead.
6. Wrap the end of the paper clip tightly around the top of the dowel rod, making sure to bend in sharp points.
Spin and enjoy!

clip_image002DIY Metal Can Lanterns

Set your yard aglow with DIY metal can lanterns!

This is a great project to upcycle metal cans! For this project we used tomato cans, a hammer and a nail. If you want to hang the can lanterns you will also need a coat hanger or piece of wire. Just make clip_image003a hole at the top on each side for hanging, and fasten on the wire.

Instructions for Metal Can Lantern Tutorial

First, fill the cans with water and freeze. This will keep the cans from collapsing when hammering.

If you are worried about fingers getting smashed, a pair of vice grips or pliers can hold the nail. (obviously, adult supervision and common sense judgment should be used here.)

Items Needed:

-Red, White and Blue Construction Paper
-Ribbon
-Scissors
-Glue or tape or stapler

Instructions:

  1. Cut out a star using the blue construction paper
  2. Cut out a slightly smaller star using the red construction paper
  3. Cut out an even smaller star using the white construction paper
  4. Paste the white star on the red one and paste the red one on the blue on. Set aside for now
  5. Cut out the letter “U” using the blue construction paper
  6. Cut out the letter “S” using the red construction paper
  7. Cut out the letter “A” using the white construction paper
  8. Cut the ribbon roughly 5 feet. Fold it in half and make a bow in the middle of the 5 feet, so that the tails on either side are roughly 2 1/2 feet.
  9. Using a stapler, tape, or glue (I found the stapler holds it better but the glue looks better) attach the star about 6 inches from the bow. Attaching one of the tails to the outsides of the star.
  10. Then proceed to attach the “U” below the star in the same way, then the “S” and then the “A”. If you have to much ribbon hanging down, cut it.
